According to the Chicago Fire Department, seven people were hurt in a construction accident today when soft concrete and wood gave way in a building under construction on East Randolph Street. The concrete was being set in a wood form (used to give the set concrete its shape) when it broke free and fell from the 24th floor, according to Chicago's Buildings Department spokesman.

The form gave way and pieces of it fell, along with some of the concrete mixture. Some people below were coated with the material and seven victims suffered minor injuries.

The liquid concrete fell from the plywood form on the building's 24th floor, said city Buildings Department spokesman Peter Scales. The material deflected off a ledge on the fifth or sixth floor and splashed down to the sidewalk, he said.

The seven injured were taken to Mercy Hospital Medical Center and Northwestern Memorial Hospital, but no word was given on the extent or seriousness of the injuries. Two cars were also damaged in the accident and the street was closed temporarily.
