Arizona nursing home cited for patient care violations

An Arizona nursing home was recently fined by the state after an inspection revealed a pattern of care deficiencies. The violations were widespead and affected a number of different aspects of patient care.

Two residents with osteoporosis were not treated properly and each suffered a fractured leg. Other residents developed bed sores, while other residents were not being given medications ordered by their doctors.

When people ask me what things they need to look for in making a decision about placing a loved one into a nursing home, this pattern of violations is exactly the sort of thing that should send them running in another direction.

Many nursing homes have serious incidents which result in severe injuries to residents, but many times the inspection which reveals them are done in response to a single incident. That does not mean that the home does not have serious systemic issues, but this home was cited in virtually every important aspect of patient care.
