Director of nursing indicted for neglect

The director of nursing at a Pennsylvania nursing home was indicted recently for neglect in the care of a resident. Also included in the charges were accusations of falsifying and tampering with records.
The resident had a head wound which was left untreated and became infested with maggots.
This story is disturbing on so many levels, the most obvious being what happened to this gentlemen.
The director of nursing is the head of the professional staff at a nursing home and is responsible for setting the overall tone for the care delivered there. Given that this nurse is setting the tone for the care at that facility, one wonders about the care that everyone else is getting.
One of the the things that is notable about the story is that other nursing homes also owned by the person who owns the facility at issue also have been plagued with issues concerning deficient care. In checking on a nursing home at the Illinois Department of Public Health web site, you can see what other facilities are owned by the same one who owns the one you are looking at.
When you see that several of the homes in the same ownership group have issues with deficient care, it is a pretty decent indication that the owners are not providing the resources to provide the care which is really needed. A lack of resources almost always shows itself in deficient care being delivered to the residents.
