A California nursing home was fined $100,000 by the state after a resident fell from a mechanical lift as she was being moved from her bed to chair by a nursing aide.

The resident suffered blunt trauma and a lacerated liver which caused her death.

All members of the nursing home staff must be properly trained in their jobs and in the use of the equipment that they use as part of their jobs. When used properly, a patient should not fall from a mechanical lift such as the one used here. This accident could have been easily prevented through the proper training and supervision of the nursing staff.
